It was briefly 40 degrees as I drove the first 2 Km's, then it came down to 39 degrees

Which is still, damn hot for a drive to Kajang!

Markus Ng Chung Yau

Markus was a great guy, who has inspired many lives, mine included.

He believed in the idea of a 1Malaysia, even before the term was coined.

He always reminded me that there is always hope for a truly united malaysia.

There were many times I would tell him that I have given up on Malaysia, and every time he would tell me that there is always hope out there as long as there are individuals like us who persevered in our efforts for a better Malaysia.

Once he wrote in a postcard to me from Portugal, reminding me that change is happening in Malaysia, slowly but surely. That was the last thing I got from him.

Everytime I feel jaded by what is happening in Malaysia, I will always remember my friend Markus.

He will always be remembered as the beacon of hope, for a truly united Malaysia.

Labour's Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Peter Mandelson's speech to the 2009 Labour Party Annual Conference:

Conference, let me say after these years away – it's good to be back home.

When the Prime Minister asked me to return to the Cabinet last October I felt a lot of things.

Shock. I think I was as shocked as most of you were.

Surprise. My network of informants had let me down on this one.

Apprehension. Returning to the goldfish bowl of British politics – and all my fans in the media. It made me pause.

I had been in this movie before - and its sequel - and neither time did I like the ending.

But I did not hesitate for too long.

The pull was too great.

The pull of coming back to serve my country when it was in the midst of the global whirlwind that had hit us.

The pull of coming back to serve this Prime Minister, our leader, Gordon Brown – who was gripping this financial crisis, leading the fightback against it when so many others seemed caught in the headlights.

But there was something else. It was the pull of coming back to serve our party.

I did not choose this party. I was born into it.

It is in my blood and in my bones.

I love working for this party and those who work so hard for it – even if, at times, perhaps not everyone in it has loved me.

I understand that. I made enemies, sometimes needlessly. I was sometimes too careless with the feelings and views of others.

But please accept this. It was for one reason only. I was in a hurry to return this party to where it should be – in government to help the hard-working people of our country.

I know that Tony said our project would only be complete when the Labour Party learned to love Peter Mandelson.

I think perhaps he set the bar a little too high.

Though I am trying my best.

But the fact is our project is far from complete.

A Labour Government has never been more needed.

Needed to fight back against the recession.

Needed to build and secure our future economic strength.

And needed to ensure we pay down debt in a way that is fair and protects jobs, homes and our frontline public services.

And yet, we must face facts.

Electorally, we are in the fight of our lives.

And, yes, we start that fight as underdogs.

But conference let me say this.

If I can come back…,

we can come back.

I came into politics to help remake the Labour Party as a party of Government.

My relationship with Gordon was forged when people said we'd never form a government again.

It made us not just modernisers, but fighters…

and certainly not quitters.

That spirit still burns as brightly within us now as it did then.

Gordon, I am proud to serve in your Government as you lead the fightback against the global recession.

The policies conceived and executed over the last year have now begun to pull our economy back onto the long road of recovery.

When it mattered, Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling have made, and are making, all the right calls.

Of course, they could have made different choices. They could have taken David Cameron and George Osborne's advice to let the recession take its course.

Can you imagine if we had?

I hope these two can find the humility to acknowledge that at every point Tory policy would not just have put the recovery at risk but have made this recession deeper, longer and far far worse.

As we get closer to the election, I want to see them and Tory candidates across the country explaining why they wouldn't provide the money to help small businesses and families in this recession when they needed it most.

No extra money to boost family incomes.

No money for the tax deferment for business and no VAT cut.

No additional money to help those who have tragically lost their jobs.

No funding for the car scrappage scheme.

They got it plain wrong at every step along the way and I say to every Labour member and campaigner across the country.

Do not let them off the hook.

I certainly will not.

Conference, the foundation of all that we want to achieve is a strong economy.

So what does that mean?

It means continuing to limit the recession's damage to our economy because when private demand plummets governments must step in.

It means, once we are through the recession – and only when this is clearly the case - we will tackle the deficit without eating into the fabric of people's lives.

And it means investing in future growth.

On all three counts, the Tories are on the wrong side of the argument.

I tell you. Withdrawing our help for the economy now as Mr Osborne demands would choke off recovery before it has even properly begun.

Not for the first time, Boy George is sailing close to the wind.

There are encouraging signs that the economy is picking up. But recovery remains fragile and uncertain, especially in manufacturing and one of its cornerstones, the car industry.

Our car scrappage scheme has been so successful the money is running out. The industry has asked that the scheme be topped up. Conference, we cannot do everything but that does not mean doing nothing. So today I am extending our popular car scrappage scheme with extra money for an additional 100,000 cars and vans.

In support of our car industry too, this government will stand behind Vauxhall workers in Ellesmere Port and Luton where the workforce themselves have been the main driver of change.

And the same goes for Jaguar Land Rover too.

But all of this only makes sense if we continue to invest in our country's future growth. It is growth that will see off recession. It is growth that is key to paying down debt.

More than ten years ago I spoke to this conference as Trade and Industry Secretary about how we needed to renew the British economy and build it around knowledge, science, innovation and enterprise.

But this isn't 1998. This is a different world.

China and India are undergoing the greatest revolution in the economic history of the world.

The greatest financial crisis of modern times also requires us to rethink our growth model for Britain.

Of course, we should be proud of our record.

Production is up by a third. More businesses. More research. More people than ever at university.   More people learning new skills although still not yet enough technicians being recruited for our new industries at the heart of our growth strategy.

Some people think that Britain is a post-industrial country that doesn't make anything anymore.

Well, someone needs to tell them that we are still the world's sixth biggest manufacturer.

And we will remain a modern manufacturing nation as long as I and the Government remain in our jobs.

But we do need to accept that, during this time, we have not got everything right.

The truth is growth was so strong we started to take it for granted. We nurtured finance – not wrongly, but we should have done more to nurture our other strengths as well.

The potential is there in Britain – we know that. In the services sector, the creative sector, the biosciences sector and in hi-tech advanced manufacturing.

But to release this potential we need a clear plan for growth and this is my mission.

First, with Labour in office, there will be no cap on talent in this country.   People with university degrees and skills earn more, climb higher and create more value.

The Tories think that more means worse. We don't agree. Britain gains when every person who is capable can get the chance to go to university, get an apprenticeship or a new skill.

But to make this possible in a tough public spending environment we all need to contribute – government, individuals and employers.

Second. I want to see an innovation nation. Science is one of the jewels in the crown of Labour's years in office. And we want closer links between businesses and universities so that good ideas don't stop at the research lab or the library door.

We're one of the world's biggest investors in Research & Development. But we still do the R better than the D and that must change.

Third. We're going to do more to put finance at the service of industry by building up new public channels to deliver private funds to innovative and fast growing companies.

Less financial engineering and a lot more real engineering.

Fourth – no more saying: the market on its own will always sort it out, like some kind of dogma.

Instead, in my department, over the last eight months, we've said: "this is viable, and it's important, but the market alone won't get it off the ground. And we can help make it happen".

We've committed three quarters of a billion pounds to new manufacturing innovation in Britain.

Investing in low carbon cars and aircraft. New digital platforms. Plastic electronics. Life sciences. Industrial biotechnology. Wind turbine development and wave power.

This isn't us picking winners as happened too often in the 1970s, when more often the losers were picking us.

This is us giving public support to new technologies without which they may never get off the drawing board.

Finally, we're committed to making sure that the benefits of investment in growth are felt in every part of this country.

The Tories say abolish the Regional Development Agencies.   We say "go for growth, let's see what you can do."

This is the industrial activism we need more of in this country and I am determined to provide it.

Where are the Tories on all this? When did you last hear David Cameron or George Osborne last say anything about Britain's industrial future?

I would ask Ken Clarke but his mobile phone and blackberry always seem to be turned off.   Or given that he keeps privately agreeing with me, perhaps David Cameron has cut it off.

The truth is these Tories have nothing to say about an active government economic role because their dogma prevents them.

They just don't get it.

This failure, I believe, speaks to a wider truth about our opponents.

David Cameron has been pursuing a strategy not of real change, but of concealment.

Yes, they have made changes to their presentation. The image-making department has done its work and done it well. Who am I to criticise?

But the Tories seem not to realise that change has to be more than a slogan. The first rule of any marketing strategy is that it must reflect the product it is selling.

And what is becoming more evident by the day is that, in their case, it doesn't. The two faces of the Conservative Party are increasingly on show. The one they want to present to the public of a revamped Tory party. And the other that betrays the reality of traditional right-wing Conservatism.

You know, the Tories seek to give the impression that somehow they have learnt the lessons from New Labour and our party's march back to the centre ground.

Well, the Tories may have skimmed the headline summary of the New Labour manual. But they never bothered to read the book.

If they had they would know what real change involves. They would know what a painful process it is.

We in this hall know what it took to make the change. Show me what has really changed in the Conservative Party.

The truth is that the old Tory right that was rejected in 1997 are quietly feeling at home again with David Cameron.

At home with his tax plans.

At home with the barely disguised glee a new generation of Conservatives is showing at the prospect of deep and savage cuts to public services.

And at home with a position on Europe that sees them aligned with extremists and sidelined in Britain's biggest market.

That is not change. Its the same old Tory policies.

So lets take on the arguments about change.

This will be a "change" election. Either we offer it, or the British public will turn to others who say that they do.

Of course, we must celebrate our record and be proud of defending it. We did fix the roof while the sun was shining.

We can look at the way we have turned around our public services, our record on tackling poverty at home and abroad, our role as a force for progressive social change. The minimum wage and the new rights for working mothers and fathers. And we can feel proud.

But let us remember that you win elections on the future, not the past.

Do not make the mistake of sitting back and expecting people to be grateful.

We must not translate the pride we feel in what we have achieved into a defence of the status quo.

Just as we fight against a Conservative Party that is still steeped in the old Tory attitudes of the 1980s, we must not allow ourselves to fall into old Labour thinking.

The British people have their eyes on the future and so must we.

We are the true progressives.

We must be restless for change, impatient to do more for the hard-working people we serve, unafraid to embrace new reform, new policies and new thinking where it is needed.

We need to think like insurgents, not incumbents.

To challenge. To argue for change. To campaign.

To be the real change-makers in British politics.

This is our task.

We need to fight back. Of course we do.

But to do so successfully it is up to us to explain – with confidence, clarity and conviction – what the choice is.

The choice between a Conservative party whose judgements on the credit crunch were wrong, or a party providing leadership in the toughest of times.

A choice between a party that lurches to the right the second it sees a chance of doing so, or our party that is resolutely in the progressive centre.

A choice between a party that does not understand the new world we live in or even what has happened in the last year, or a Labour Party that knows the world has changed and we have to change with it.

Experience and change with Gordon's leadership.

Or the shallowness of David Cameron.

In one way or another I have been part of the last five election campaigns this Party has fought.

Let me tell you a secret. Deep down in my guts I always knew who was going to win. Even, sadly, in 1992.

This time, it is not cut and dried.

This election is up for grabs.

So conference, we may be the underdogs.

But if we show the British people that we have not lost the fighting spirit and appetite for change which has defined this party throughout its history then we can and will win.

Win for our Party.

Win for our country.

Win for the British people.

PAS ke, UMNO ke, sama sahaja dua kali lima

Saya hanya mampu tersenyum sahaja apabila membaca artikel di dalam the star pada hari ini yang memaparkan komen ahli dan pimpinan PAS di bahagian permatang pauh yang dikatakan tidak setuju dengan pencalonan Mansor Othman sebagai calon pilihanraya kecil yang akan

Saya tidak terkejut dengan reaksi ini kerana saya sudah lama beranggapan bahawa di antara kebanyakan orang pas dan kebanyakan orang umno, jiwa politik nya sama sahaja.

Sudah tentu ada kepimpinan pas yang saya anggap tidak termasuk dalam kategori 'sama sahaja dengan umno' ini. Contohnya YAB tuan guru nik abdul aziz sendiri, yb husam musa, yb khalid samad, dan beberapa yang lain.

Adalah amat merugikan kepada pas pulau pinang umumnya dan pas penanti khususnya jika mereka enggan untuk berkompromi dan menerima realiti politik kebersamaan di dalam pakatan rakyat. Mereka sepatutnya, sebagai partai islam, perlu lebih mengingati tazkirah umum yang biasanya mengingatkan ahli ahli pergerakan islam bahawa kepimpinan itu bukanlah sesuatu yang diminta atau dituntut, tetapi amanah yang berat malah di elakkan.

YAB dato nik aziz telah memberi komen bahawa pas penanti perlu ingat bahwa perjanjian pembahagian kawasan sebelum mac 2008 perlu dihormati.

Pas penanti perlu sedar percaturan mereka sebenarnya memalukan ahli pas di tempat lain, yang ramai berpendapat permintaan pas penanti secara terbuka ini seolah olah membuka pekung di dada. Malah ini juga seolah olah menunjukkan ada ahli pas atau bahagian pas yang sanggup berbuat apa sahaja untuk menuntut kuasa.

Pada pendapat saya juga luahan pas penanti ini merupakan satu peringatan kepada kepimpinan pas sendiri dan kepimpinan pakatan rakyat umumnya bahwa rata rata di kalangan ahli pas ada juga yang masih berjiwa politik machiaveli sebegini. Namun tidak dinafikan di dalam pkr dan DAP juga pasti wujuk elemen elemen yang sama.

Mungkin juga ahli dan kepimpinan pas penanti masih ingat waktu waktu dahulu ketika mereka menjadi pembangkang di bawak dato seri anwar sebagai YB permatang pauh mereka yang merupakan pemimpin umno sewaktu itu. Penentangan pas penanti ini juga boleh dibaca sebagai satu signal tidak setuju mereka kepada YB permatang pauh skrg itu sendiri dan juga selaku ketua pembangkang.agak ganjal bukan jika ketua pembangkang tidak mendapat sokongan penuh koalisi sendiri di dalam ahli parlimen sendiri?

Jika ini berlaku di parlimen pekan contohnya, pasti blog blog pembangkang dan malaysiakini dan sbg nya akan memberi komen panjang ttg bagaimana org BN tak setuju dengan PM.

Memang benarlah di dalam politik ini, terutamanya di dalam politik melayu, luka luka yang lama pasti sukar untuk sembuh. Pas penanti pasti masih ingat betapa sukarnya mereka sewaktu mereka dulu dalam pembangkang.kini mungkin sudah jadi kerajaan, tatapi nampak gayanya mereka masih juga tidak gembira.

Saya amat tertarik utk melihat bagaimana perkembangan isu penanti ini akan menjadi pembuka bicara isu isu hangat lain sewaktu pemilihan pas june nanti.

Apa yang penting, saya ingin mengingatkan rakan rakas pas saya, terutamanya yang progresif di lembah kelang, agar jangan terlalu naif memikirkan bahwa orang orang politik pas itu semuanya baik baik dan tidak ada machiaveli elemen.jika anda ingat kami di dalam umno menular dengan masalah korupsi dan perebutan kuasa, sedarlah bahawasanya di dalam pas pun ada juga dua kali lima sahaja.

Pengalaman saya di kelantan menunjukkan bahwaya korupsi konsesi balak contohnya, bukan sahaja menular di kalangan ahli politik umno, malah juga di kalangan ahli politik pas.

Mahu atau tidak, inilah lumrah politik yang sangat mengharukan. Malangnya, inilah politik orang melayu.

Corruption in UMNO

The case in the picture involves a particular Mohd Nor Awang, former seremban umno division vice chief (naib ketua bahagian). He was caught on tape by another UMNO branch chief (ketua cawangan) taman zaiton indah area, Rezwat Shahril who cleverly trapped Mohd Nor by having a tape recorder in his pocket while the whole event unfolds.

According to Ms Noorfazlin hamdan the DPP in the first case, at a parking lot behind restoran negeri taman catleya in senawang at 12.20pm 1st august 2008, mohd nor offered and gave rezwat RM200 and a 'chai list'

A 'chai list' is a list of preferable candidates in an lection/contest aligned to a particular group.in this case, the chai list refers to the list of candidates aligned to Mohd Nor.

On the 2nd of Aug 2008, at 430pm in seremban center point, Mohd Nor met with rezwat again and handed him RM500.

Mohd Nor now claims trial at the high court of malaya.

This is not the first of many such cases in UMNO, nor would it be the last of it as well.

Corruption such as these in UMNO are unfortunately rampant, to say the least. It is one those cancerous practices in UMNO, across board at grassroot level, all the way to the top.

Of course there are exceptions. Well, it is also unfortunate that nowadays UMNO politicians who are considered absolutely free of such practices at any level are considered, exceptions.

What is more startling is the way corruption is practiced in UMNO.

Such as in above, many of these cases are carried in broad daylight, and even worse, in public designated areas.

These shows how most of them aren't ashame of comitting such dispicable acts, and how much these criminal habits has become a norm in the party.

On top of that, looking at the amount of money involved, one cannot be blamed to be puzzled by how 'cheap' the grassroot 'support' in UMNO can come by, or supposedly so.

For a mere RM700 per branch/cawangan, once can assume to have 'gained' support from that particular branch.

There are usually 150 branch in every division. But you only need a mere 80 of those branch to support u to win simple majority in a local division contest.

A simple calculation would show us that probably by a mere RM 60, 000 one can possibly win a seat in an UMNO divisional election.

I say merely RM 60, 000 because for many rich ambitious umno malays out there, that is such a meagre amount, relative not only to the wealth that are increasingly moving upwards in the malay community, but meagre as well to the 'return on investment (ROI) . Many UMNO people nowadays realise that the ROI will come in the forms of federal projects which are usually awarded through umno divisional leaders. Hence, it comes as no surprise that nowadays it can be easily assumed that more than 70 percent of the top UMNO divisional leaders across the country are either contractors themselves, or they would own shares in a particular contractor company, one way or another.

Of course there is nothing wrong in being a contractor. But what many UMNO people do not find shameful these days are the act of 'buying' their way to UMNO power, in order to position themselves better for more return on their earlier investments.

Orang UMNO ramai yang tidak mahu bercakap tentang rasuah di dalam UMNO kepada orang di luar UMNO, terutamanya kepada kaum bukan melayu. Malah, ramai juga yang tidak gembira jika ada ahli UMNO sendiri yang bercakap tentang rasuah di dalam UMNO, terutama kepada kaum bukan melayu. Tetapi mereka tidak malu untuk memberi dan menerima rasuah. Bagi ahli UMNO yang terlibat di dalam rasuah, ini sudah menjadi sebahagian daripada lumrah permainan politik. Ada juga yang beranggapan adalah naif untuk menghapuskan politik rasuah kerana ramai lagi yang mahu cari jalan mudah untuk menjadi berkuasa, dan ramai lagi yang sanggup untuk menerima rasuah, demi untuk sesuap nasi.

UMNO is by no means the only party afflicted with corruption practices. But it is without doubt the worse of the whole lot, inside and outside BN.

UMNO members knows about how rampant corruption is in the party. It is also without doubt, that money politics (the so called politically correct term for bribery that UMNO likes to hide themselves behind) were rampant during the UMNO general assembly.

It is also true that at both national and divisional level, there is a subscribed view that every individual will only have a limited amount of time to make as much money as possible from their place in UMNO.

As my friends in UMNO usually says, kalau tak jatuh dalam poket kita, jatuh dalam poket orang lain. (If it doesn't go into my pocket, it will go to others)

I find it rare to find people who seriously believe that a corrupt UMNO is bound for a downfall, especially in the coming national elections.

But for those who have already pocketed enough for a nice apartment at KLCC and a new BMW 5 series, what is there to lose anyways?

-Wmf is an umno party member who believes that the only way to totally eradicate corruption in umno is by umno losing power in the next election. He believes that a new generation of umno members will be able to reshape a new and stronger umno in opposition. He is confident that a prolonged Pakatan government will inherit the same corrupt people who are now rampaging UMNO paving a return of UMNO possibly after 15 years of opposition. Better brain drain, rather than brain in the drain?

I found this advert in the star very offensive to the whole idea of One Malaysia

How can we allow a foreign country to advertise in our most highest selling daily english newspaper the virtues of migrating to their country?

This is outright mercenary act (in print!)

Some friends of mine say to me better brain drain than brain in the drain

But I tell them to have a little bit more faith in the future

And we shud all condemn the publishing of such advertisement inviting migration to other country, at a loss to this nation

The day I stand proud to be an 'Erdogan'

The chairperson of that eventful forum in Davos must be constantly thinking the consequences of his actions to the middle east peace initiative. America is certainly hot on his tails.

Recep Teyyep Erdogan the Turkish prime minister, furious for not given equal speaking time by the chairperson as compared to Shimon Peres the president of Israel who had more than 25minutes to himself, walked out of the forum. Ban Kin Moon was left speechless.

The scene of Erdogan walking out of the forum was shown live across all major channels worldwide. Back in Ankara and Istandul, he returned home as a national hero.

I was not captivated by his walk-out, more than I was with the way Erdogan dealt with the whole situation, and how calm he was through out. Yes, he was certainly incensed by the way he felt the forum was being manipulated, but certain he knew that such was possible anyways.

He knows that Israel, of all nations, cannot afford to make an enemy out of Turkey. As a matter of fact, technically, Turkey is a friend of Israel as it is one of only a few Muslim countries in the world, who recocnise Israel and has an Israeli ambassador residing in Ankara. This is in spite of the fact that the islamist party won convincingly in the last few elections in Turkey.

Erdogan chose his words well. He even made peres rose his voice, of which he reminded the israeli president that by raising his voice, peres was trying to evade the truth. It is the art of such masterful debate and mind game that amazes me. Erdogan reminds us that when it matters most, it how we convince the world, that counts.

Erdogan was merely trying to make a simple point. Israel is unable to hide the fact that its insurgent into Gaza merely a few weeks ago, was a bloody,unlawful act of war. But Peres, mindful that all eyes and ears are now convinced of Erdogan's argument, tried his best to describe how militant Hamas is and that Israel is merely trying to defend itself.

Israel for the past few weeks realises that the global perception are against them. Day in and day out, Peres as president of israels now appears in many television series defending the act of IDF, the army of Israel. Ironically, or rather more as propaganda, even its army IDF, means the Israeli Defence Force.

But for all the rabbit that israel can pull out of hat to trick the world and cajole america, it now has a worthy opponent. And it is to their annoyance, that this new enemy in the form Erdogan and his bright savvy young 'armies', is also considered a dear friend by the mighty United States of America.

Erdogan, is the embodiment of the perfect Islamist. A brilliant man, an extraordinary strategist, savvy and diplomatic, he is the worse opponent that Israel or any enemy of islam can expect. How do israel make a devil out of someone who is even willing to sit and debate with israel and host israel in their own homeland?

Israel loaths Turkey, and even more so the islamist in Erdogan and in Turkey. But why are they unable to demonise Turkey the way they do of iran or even hamas?

America for one, needs turkey on their side in the strategic alliance of nato against the emergence of mother russia north of the black sea. And they found the islamist leadership in turkey an unseeming 'friend' as they try to manouver themselves in between the blacksea and the war in iraq. Israel in return must tow the line.

But it is Erdogan's longsightedness in all things strategic that has allowed the Islamist to rule thus far in Turkey, albeit the support by America. The secularist in turkey has been unable to secure the support of their friends in the cia, simply because Erdogan, unlike the former leaders in Rafah, are much more sophisticated. To put it simply, Erdogan is playing the mind games at a totally different level, at which his enemies do not even understand.

When the secularist (or even america and israel) thought that by taking government erdogan would send off the israeli ambassador, he did not do so. When the constitution disallowed erdogan's wife to enter the official prime minister's residence, he merely said "ok, I ll stay at my own house". Erdogan was openly pro EU and pro market, pushing strongly for Turkey's entrance into Brussels, and thus finding new friends in the likes of britain, italy and spain. As members of Nato, it was a strong ally of america in the so called war on terror.

Secularist has almost given up in turkey.israel is trying their best to understand and read his next move.while america now owes turkey, more than otherwise.

Erdogan knew that he is in a much stronger position to walk out of that forum more than he would have 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. America needs him more than he needs America.

At the same time, by leveraging on unprecedented moves unexpected of a true islamist in dealing with israel, he makes it obvious that the act of israel, is not an act of self defence, nor is it an action by the "jewish people who are devils" as many people in malaysia like to say, but it is simply an act of unlawful war and terror by the zionist government itself.

As erdogan said it himself in the rally today upon his return from davos. " We must be reminded that the enemy of palestine are not the jewish people, or the israeli citizens, but it is the zionist government".

Of course some islamist would like to equate the 3 as the same, but one has to realise that Erdogan was merely trying to remind us, that by having less enemy, you actually move forward faster and more effectively. Why make unnecessary enemies, well at least, why make them all at the same time?

There is an abundance of thinking that the islamist in malaysia must learn from this drama of erdogan in davos.

To start with, shame on those malay islamist who freely make derogatory terms out of the name Erdogan, to subscribe scournfully those with supposed 'reformist' agenda in the islamic movement, and especially, in the so called islamic party.

As a matter of fact, it is downright patronising to equate 'Erdoganism' with any particular individual political leadership in malaysia. Obviously, Erdogan is way beyond our Malay mentality league or any individual politician who may or may not be erdogan's friend. We the islamist in malaysia, has yet reached that level of thinking, well hopefully not for long.

If anything, the islamist in malaysia, cross cultures,race, mazhab,movement and political party affiliation, must realise that as much as we like to hate the zionist army by boycotting mcdonalds and drinking less starbucks, we will go nowhere in saving palestine, as would like to, unless we start moving to the next level of strategizing and thinking.

It is shameful that even as chairman of the oic, the best we could do to save palestine is eat less mcdonalds and feel less guilty by sparing some change in that donation box. And of course, holding concerts, in the name of palestine. Utterly ridiculous.

Paradigm change is what the islamist need in malaysia. And to embrace erdogan and the islamist movement ideals in turkey is abt shifting our strategy towards mastering the mind games, that is much more effective and powerful but certainly more difficult too.

The islamist in malaysia must shift our gear towards learning the more global issues affecting islam, and learning to strategize for islam in a more global view. Many of us talk abt winning the war for palestine, and yet little amongst us the islamist are aware of essential reading materials such as the haaretz, or the jerusalem post.

But it is not just abt palestine. The islamist in malaysia must learn to be global, in the most real sense, the way erdogan is. We need not to talk abt negara islam and scaremongering others with words like hudud, when in reality an islamic world in malaysia shall be achieve in its truest sense when the islamist in malaysia are more sophisticated and intellectual in thinking, leaving behind elements of racism, tribalism, factionalism and all the ism which has divided us islamist and malaysia for so long.

In a more micro level, Usrah systems must be liberated from mere studies of the same books and materials thought for almost 2 generations. Not disregarding the old books by authors fathi yakan and the likes, young islamist must be exposed to literatures written by karen amstrong or even to strategy books by lou tzu.

The liberation of islam and islamist in malaysia shall draw closer each day. The old will die, and with them, old ideas and old cultures. The young must be brave to bring change, for we do not want to be just mere followers in the global agenda of islam.

islam is a beautiful religion that has been at the end of much fitnah by the act of its own followers.islam is a religion, whose truth can defend itself. And we the young islamist, must rise to the occasion of change, for the rise of islam shall not wait for us.

KOTA BARU: De facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pic) stuck his neck out against the Government by condemning the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) against civilians.

He urged the Government to revert to the original purpose of the law, which was to curb communism.

“It is time for the Government to go back to the original spirit of the ISA and it should only be used on armed terrorists or those out to topple the Government by force.

“I am not calling for a repeal of the ISA but for it to be used only when there is a real threat to national security and not on civilians,” he told a press conference at his home in Pasir Hor here yesterday.

According to Zaid, he was prepared to accept any consequences from his apparent breaking of ranks from the Cabinet over the issue of the ISA.

He said he was also willing to step down as a minister if his actions were deemed to have undermined the Government and Cabinet.

“I do not want to cause any trouble for Pak Lah (Abdullah). I respect what he is trying to change but on the matter of the ISA, I am against imposing it on civilians. I joined his administration to make changes and everybody knows, I am also for a more open-form of press reporting.”

Zaid was commenting on the arrests of Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng, Selangor senior executive councillor Teresa Kok and Malaysia Today news portal editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin on Friday under the Act. Tan was released on Saturday.

By using the ISA randomly, Zaid said, the Government was sending a message that it did not trust the capabilities of its own enforcement agencies such as the police in maintaining peace.

“There were ample punitive law to act against lawbreakers without having to invoke the ISA,” Zaid said.

Zaid, who is a Minister in the Prime Minister’s department, said the use of the ISA also creates an impression of selective prosecution as the Government cannot seemingly incarcerate everybody but only a handful.

“In this latest episode of ISA, we (the Government) have generated an impression of selective prosecution since no action was taken against the person who allegedly uttered seditious remarks. We are saying that we are only acting against those who are disloyal to us.”

He said he was glad that Tan was released but was concerned over the continued detention of the other two

Antara pendatang dan penumpang

Pada mulanya saya agak keberatan nak ulas kekecohan yang berpunca ekoran daripada kenyataan ketua UMNO bahagian Bukit Bendera, Pulau Pinang bernama Ahmad bin Ismail. Sama ada benar atau tidak apa yang didakwa dikatakan olehnya mengenai rakyat Malaysia keturunan Cina bukan persoalannya kerana isu tersebut sudahpun merebak dan mengapi-apikan keadaan.

Jika tidak ditangani dengan cermat, teliti dan bijak, isu itu boleh ditangguk dalam air yang keruh oleh anasir-anasir yang ingin melihat negara ini hancur serta mengundang campur tangan kuasa asing. Dalam zaman dunia tanpa sempadan dan liputan meluas dan segera oleh media elektronik antarabangsa, apa yang berlaku di sesebuah negara itu tidak dapat disembunyi atau dinafikan.

Isu pokok yang dibangkitkan oleh Ahmad Ismail membabitkan persoalan "menumpang" iaitu rakyat Malaysia keturunan Cina adalah penumpang di negara ini. Beliau menjelaskan bahawa ia merujuk kepada zaman pra-Merdeka. Bagaimanapun, sensitiviti rakyat Malaysia keturunan Cina telah terguris.

Saya tidak mengenali secara peribadi Ahmad Ismail, tetapi kenal agak rapat dengan Allahyarham abangnya, Abdul Rahim Ismail, pemilik Syarikat Pembinaan Rahim yang pada satu ketika dahulu agak terkenal sebagai sebuah firma pembinaan Bumiputera yang unggul di Pulau Pinang. Saya tidak tahu apa dah jadi dengan syarikat itu selepas Abdul Rahim meninggal dunia.

Secara peribadi, saya tidak setuju dengan apa yang didakwa dikata oleh Ahmad Ismail atas beberapa sebab.

Bagi saya, hampir 90 peratus rakyat Malaysia, khususnya di Semenanjung, adalah pendatang dan kita semua sebenarnya menumpang hidup di bumi Allah. Kita bukan pemilik kekal tetapi hanya menumpang.

Sebagai contoh, saya sendiri adalah keturunan pendatang yang menumpang hidup di bumi bertuah ini. Datuk nenek di sebelah bapa saya berhijrah dari Makkah dan dari Brunei ke sini manakala di sebelah ibu pula dari Hadhramut, Yaman. Kami adalah pendatang dan penumpang sama seperti hampir semua penduduk negara ini khususnya di Pulau Pinang.

Bagi Ahmad Ismail, dia juga datang dari keluarga pendatang dan menumpang hidup di negara ini. Ahmad Ismail tidak boleh menafikan hakikat bahawa datuk neneknya adalah pendatang dari India untuk menerokai penghidupan yang lebih baik dan selesa di bumi bertuah ini.

Perdana Menteri Abdullah bin Ahmad juga tergolong dalam kategori yang sama. Datuknya di sebelah ibu adalah pendatang dari wilayah Guandong, China. Pendek kata, datuk Pak Lah iaitu bapa Allahyarhamah Kailan bernama Hassan Salleh atau Hah Su Chiang adalah seorang pendatang. Beliau berhijrah ke Tanah Melayu dari wilayah Guandong (Kwantung) pada pertengahan abad ke-19 dan menetap di Bayan Lepas sebagai pekebun getah, pesawah padi dan kemudian saudagar intan berlian.

Najib Tun Razak, Timbalan PM juga berasal daripada keluarga pendatang iaitu dari Sulawesi, Indonesia atau lebih senang disebut orang Bugis manakala sepupunya Hishamudin Hussein tidak terlepas daripada darah keturunan Turki.

Datuk nenek mantan PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad juga pendatang dari Kerala, India manakala ibu Almarhum Tunku Abul Rahman berasal dari negeri Siam (Thailand).

Kesultanan Melayu Melaka pun dibuka oleh orang pendatang dari Sumatra bernama Parameswara, seorang anak raja atau bangsawan beragama Hindu.

Dalam sejarah kesultanan Melayu, kita dapati ada yang ditubuh oleh pendatang dari Bugis dan ada pula dari Hadhramut selain dari Minangkabau.

Hampir semua orang Melayu di sini berasal dari luar Tanah Melayu tetapi diiktiraf sebagai "bangsa Melayu" oleh Perlembagaan Persekutuan. Kita adalah "Melayu mengikut takrifan Perlembagaan" iaitu beragama Islam, mengamalkan adat resam Melayu dan bertutur dalam bahasa Melayu. Malangnya, bahasa Melayu nampaknya dimatikan oleh orang Melayu (UMNO) sendiri apabila dinamakan sebagai bahasa Malaysia.

Oleh itu, orang Arab seperti Syed Hamid Albar dan saya, orang Aceh seperti Sanusi Junid, orang India seperti Kader Sheikh Fadzir dan Nor Mohamed Yakcop, orang Bugis seperti Najib, orang Minang seperti Rais Yatim, orang Jawa seperti Mohamad Rahmat dan yang lain seperti dari Madura, Pulau Boyan, Siam, Burma, Yunnan (China) dan selatan Filipina dengan mudah boleh diiktirf sebagai "Melayu".

Mereka diterima sebagai orang Melayu tidak kira sama ada mereka bertutur bahasa Melayu atau tidak di rumah umpamanya si Arab berbahasa Arab, si Jawa berbahasa Jawa dan si Minang berbahasa Minang atupun si Mamak berbahasa Tamil.

Bahasa-bahasa yang disebut itu bukan bahasa Melayu dan jika dilihat dari sudut Perlembagaan Persekutuan, tidak boleh diterima atau diiktiraf sebagai bangsa Melayu. Walau bagaimanapun, atas kepentingan dan faktor politik, semuanya diterima sebagai Melayu dan Bumiputera.

Oleh itu, adalah tidak adil untuk menuding jari kepada orang Cina yang juga kaum pendatang sama seperti orang Arab, India, Aceh, Minang, Batak, Mandailing, Jawa, Madura mahupun Bugis, sebagai menumpang di negeri ini. Kita tidak boleh menafikan bahawa sebilangan besar datuk nenek orang Cina telah berhijrah ke negeri ini semasa Kesultanan Melayu Melaka, bahkan kesultanan-kesultanan terdahulu di Kedah mahupun Terengganu dan Kelantan serta semasa Francis Light berjaya menipu Sultan Kedah untuk menduduki Pulau Pinang pada 1786.

Kita adalah kaum pendatang yang menumpang hidup di negeri ini. Golongan yang boleh diiktiraf sebagai orang asal atau anak bumi tulen adalah mereka yang kita kenali sebagai Negrito, Jakun, Semang, Jahut, Orang Laut, Orang Darat, Senoi dan suku kaum masyarakat Asli lain yang masih menjadi penghuni belantara.

Kita tidak harus lupa akan sumbangan dan pengorbanan semua kaum dan suku kaum untuk membangunkan Malaysia sama ada dari sudut ekonomi, kemasyarakatan, keselamatan dan yang paling penting kesepakatan dan perpaduan. Semua orang yang kena dan seharusnya membayar cukai, berbuat demikian tanpa mengira kaum atau asal keturunan, sama ada pendatang atau penumpang.

Kita semua adalah rakyat Malaysia.

Recently, I had the pleasure of travelling down to jb on train.I have always loved travelling on trains, going back to my fosis days when after my morning law classes, I wud then take the train to travel up and down the country to train young budding muslims to be involved in uk student politics, only to return back to nottingham by late evening, and sometime in the wee hours of the winter mornings. Those were really the best of days (sigh..)

I took this picture in one of the carriages. Malaysians (translators) has always been known for either their bad english, or bad malay.

In this case, I'm betting that the translator must have been one of those pj boys/girls who had gone through a more anglophilic education, hence the notorious malay translation.

For the benefit of my british muslim friends who are reading this, the malay translation given on the picture for wc out of order is translated in malay as "wc is off work today".

There was this another joke in town, when u go to the movies to watch cowboy movies or a movie involving a shooting scene, the translation in malay wud sometime include words such as "itik!" Why? "itik" is the malay word for duck, as in the donald duck.

But instead of translating duck into "tunduk", which is the true meaning of take cover, so everytime the guy shoots at the villain, the word "itik" comes out.

I wonder sometimes whether those translator do even watch those movies that they are translating.

Ps: to my sime darby friends, I notice that those adverts that sd are putting up as translation to "sime darby- building sustainable futures" is also wrong. They are now put up as sime darby- membina masa depan yang "mampan", but this is incorrect, because sustainable should be translated as mapan without the m in the middle.

Mampan means kukuh or strong.unless of course u meant a strong future, which I don't think you do.

Confidence crisis

This years merdeka celebration has come and go without much fanfare. Many feels that this has probably been one of the worst merdeka celebration in recent times. In contrast to last years extravagant and lavish celebration, this year has been really quiet.

It was almost as if that the whole malaysian nation has decided to cooperate in not putting up as many jalur gemilang as possible, and none of those ridiculous "kek jalur gemilang terpanjang didunia" attempts as well.

On the one hand, it is a positive thing that we encourage a less lavish merdeka celebration, for it is a after all a remembrance of those who has sacrificed for the indepence of this nation.

Nevertheless, it is almost a general consensus that there is a feeling amongst many malaysians, a feeling of despair, a feeling of uncertainty, and a feeling of dissatisfaction towards a many things which has happened and still happening in this country.

Politics, and the economy.

I think I'm tired of commenting on the political state of this country.

But it is a worrying concern to me though, that each day, the economic situation in this country seems to get worse.

I thought the budget was quite good.certainly more goodies than last year albeit the fact that borneo received a whole chunk of it, but really, they deserve it after being ignored for a long long time now.

It is a concern though that again, this is a deficit budget.that means we are spending more than what we are earning.

Its like using the american express lah, no money also can budget to spend.

The vistage-mier ceo confidence index showed that the confidence index in the country amongst its top corporate people are at the lowest ever. It is even 41 points lower than it was at the same time last year.

It has identified the following items as upcoming challenges:

1. Current and expected economic conditions to worsen

2.Lower revenue and lower growth expectations

3.Higher oil prices

4. Political uncertainty

5. Dissatisfaction with broadband service

6. Efficiency of public service

7. Rising living cost

I think we are now living in a very challenging period. interest rate being capped at the current level, will only leave us all guessing, at what point really is the inflation now. The official figure was something like 6 percent or something, but then again we are such a protected/subsidized economy that it is almost impossible to really identify how inflated the economy is at the moment.

A report by a foreign research house says that malaysia will face a recession by 3rd quarter next year, and it may be worse than 1997.

I guess the cycle is back at the bottom now.

Dear Mr Transport Minister

As much as I would like to express my worries over the current political situation in this country, I am actually writing to you to complain about the lrt system in kl specifically, and the public transport system in malaysia generally.

Although I now consider myself one of the lucky few who have been spared the agony and frustration of being called a public transport commuter in msia, today I had the privelege of experiencing at first hand, how it must have felt for the thousands ( if not tens of thousands) who rely on the lrt and komuter ktm daily especially, during the peak hours.

Yes I'm writing this now because, today I had to use the stupid lrt.lucky for me, unlike the thousands out there, I am complaining just because I had to use it sometimes.

Just look at the queue sir! (Please see attachment)

Imagine having to go through all this on a daily basis. Imagine further how all this people would find their way through the small double carriage lrt.

What your eye can imagine, your nose can certainly not smell sir.

Try having 7 people packed in ure perdana v6 and u will then have a similar 'live' experience of how the lrt and komuter is.

Then again I'm sure u don't get more than 2 people in the back of the car.how wonderful.

It is almost ludicrous to even consider that we the barisan nasional government is unable to solve this on going problem. I say on going sir simply because the kl people are tired of complaining as their complaints usually falls on deaf ears.or different ears, because I cannot recall how many times have the govt changed the management of the lrt system.maybe this can give u some idea why we lost kl to the pakatan party..

I am no genius but I always wonder how ludicrous it is that the platform of the lrt is way longer than the carriage itself.isn't it only logical that we could just buy new carriages since the platform seems to be able to fit at least another double carriage? I know for a fact that one double carriage costs around 25 million ringgit.

This is no where near expensive.we can spend to buy at least ten of them and people will not cry foul over wastage of public funds. What is 250 million if it is enjoyed by the hundreds of thousands every month?

On the contrary, we spent 4 billion or more (16 times more than the above request) on an empty now unused cargo space in a certain port in a certain city in selangor.and as minister in charge I'm sure u know full well of it as (although I must say ure handling the issue very well).

and why must we pay and use different tickets for the lrt, star, komuter, monorail, bus.. Its ridiculous! Don't tell me we don't have a solution to this? I say, u should just 'wrangle' the companies who owns this PUBLIC PROPERTIES to accept a common denominated card/ticket.
If they don't want to accept, kick them out of their contract and I'm sure any threat would be useful.why shud we care abt them lot when the people is suffering? More often than not, the people who actually owns and run public transport, don't even use public transport because they have their mercedes s class and porshe cayenne to ride on! this is why most of us have to pay more but no better service in return.how can this ppl fix things when they don't even use it at peak times?

Most of the cities in the world uses single ticket system. Why can't we just do the same?

And finally that stupid ticket machine at those lrt and ktm stations.most of them don't accept notes, and most of it are broken or out of service all the time! So not only do you have to queue to board the train, u even have a long queue to buy tickets manually! What kind of nonsense is that? Had we only have one ticket system for a day trip, it will solve the problem in one go!

A governments job is to make its people happy.the people don't just want long nice roads and nice lrt, but at the end, they want to be happy.how can the people be happy when after a day s experience of using the public transport, u end up getting to office with an unhappy mood (thus resulting in lower productivity) and u also end up reaching home in an angry feeling (hence the unhappy family dinner session resulting in more family and social problems)

Yes it may seem remote how a stupid ticket machine experience and a packed lrt may affect national gdp and national divorce rate etc, but if u really think abt it, u will realise it is not that so remote after all.

What is our reaction to the zimbabwean crisis?!

As I write this, the people in zimbabwe has probaly woken up to the reality of another day of tyranny under the zanu pf robert mugabe

Last friday's unopposed election of mugabe in the presidential election run off is certainly the final nail in the coffin of the many zimbabweans who have died, struggling for a better future for zimbabwe. The leader for the movement for democrat change (mdc) morgan tsangirai (pronounced chang-gi-rai) whom, despite having a lead in the first round of election 2 months ago, refused to contest in the run off vote last friday, citing threats to the voters.

In harare now, voters of mdc and tsangirai in the last presidential election, are being tortured, hounded, some are raped, and a large number are being killed.one might asks how do these thugs of mugabe finds this voters , when surely the votes are suppose to be secret ballot? Apparently every area where the votes for mdc were high, its occupants are now subjected to daily torture and humiliation.

To put it simply, the situation is probably short of the civil war scenario that we must have all seen in that move, hotel rwanda. I watched that movie many times over and I could not but imagine the same thing to happen again. I might be proven wrong with what we re reading now about zimbabwe.

World over, this zimbabwean crisis are receiving front page material attention, that prime ministers and presidents are made to comment on it. Surely many were quick to condemn the situation.

But I am rather perturbed and annoyed that in malaysia this situation seemed to have missed public attention, what more the politicians. Of course, most malaysians would struggle to find where in the world is zimbabwe (somehwere in africa maybe?) , what more to care of the "political" situation there (although political here means people dying and slaughtered/raped/burned on a daily basis). Sure we malaysians have better issues to care about? (Minyak naik, hmm minyak naik, hmm sept 16th ..hmm) . Oh well, it must be my idealistic surreal side that makes me thing that we ought to do something about this zimbabwe crisis too (although my friend ask me why must we really care abt everything else out there, aren't malaysia enough already?)

At least, I think we as a country shud make it clear that we condemn the killings and the way things are in zimbabwe at the moment. Yes some may argue, look at myanmar, but I don't think being hypocritical here would make us lose any face, plus zimbabwe is no asean country and really, the people there are now being slaughtered (literaly) on a daily basis that certainly this is one level above of what we probably know of myanmar ( okay okay I ll correct myself, its burma not myanmar, and yes yangon not rangoon).

There are a few things we malaysia could do in order to 'help' the situation in zimbabwe:

First we should as malaysians , make public condemnation of the situation in zimbabwe. This can be done by our leaders through the mass media, and also by the people through writings/blogs. Even better, why don't u people who likes to demonstrate, make a public demonstration at the zimbabwe embassy in kl? And by u people I mean by the ones in red/blue, green , or even pemuda umno t shirts. Is it because there are no muslims in zimbabwe that we don't care?(Are u sure there are no muslims?) Is it because there are no budhist/hindus there that we don't care? Sometimes I do think that the mat saleh has a less prejudicial view of the world then us asians who are supposedly "multicultural and live in harmony". Ok even if u don't like this demo demo thing, you can even write a letter stating your displeasure at what is happening in zimbabwe.

(unless of course ure comfortable being the not so good people who enjoys reading this blog and swip swaping it with facebook and continue doing your work,hoping that guilt feeling will be gone by lunchtime)

Seconly, we malaysia should make a statement that if there is proof that there is genocide and killings in zimbabwe, the perpetrators must and will be judged by the world courts on genocide.

Finally, and certainly most effectively, we must freeze the assets of known culprits in zimbabwe who I think, must have at least some of their gazillion worth of personal assets, hidden somewhere in our country. As some of you in the inner circles are aware, robert mugabe and his clansmen are known to make visits to malaysia for holidays.they like malaysia because we don't know abt them and their 'hobbies' back home, plus the people who do not about them, don't care or already given big contracts in zimbabwe (read- blood money)

So certainly they would probably discover that keeping money in malaysia is probably not a bad idea after all.

On top of that, I am sure some of these hench men's of mugabe also send their children to study here in malaysia thanks to the openness of malaysia's capitalistic private education in accepting anybody with abundance of dollars and cents.

We should kindly inform them (the children/students) that what is happening in zimbabwe, is unacceptable.

No harm however, should be directed at the personnels of the staff and officers of the zimbabwe high commission in taman ampang as per address above.they , are protected by the geneva convention (whatever that is).

On a more different albeit constructive note..

Of course, we the islamist, should also do some solat hajat to pray that the innocent people in zimbabwe will be protected from the evils roaming the land.

why not? We have done solat hajat for a great many things including the various ones on palestine, so why is zimbabwe any different? Just because u have never heard of it? Or just because they are not muslims? Are u sure there are no muslims there? Even the most conventional estimate puts the number of muslims there at 120 000 muslims, what more a wopping 1.2 million estimated by others.

The point is, are they any different that they don't deserve our attention?

Go figure!

The western media calls the place, a living hell.I think it is about time that we malaysians, go above local issues, and resonates our distaste and anger towards what is happening in zimbabwe.

During the medieval times, only court the jesters aka the jokers are allowed to speak of the truth, or well at least, they get away with doing so most of the time..

The logic I guess was very simple. The king wouldn't take seriously whatever was said by the court jesters, simply because they are supposedly characters of unsound reasoning (or so the king would have been led to believe)

And I think in the modern world as well, we also have our very own court jesters in the form of cartoonist who fills the pages of our newspapers daily with their own take of our daily lives ( and how to solve some of the problems- see picture).

I think more often than not, prominent cartoonist such as reggiee lee, lat, and zunar especially, are one of the many modern court jesters who sometimes, uses their cartoon to tell us what they think of our malaysian life, sometimes making mockery our of particular political leaders.

Like the king, these political leaders would certainly have no qualms being 'criticised' in art form by these jokers (literal meaning connoted) as they the cartoonist couldn't have meant any harm apart from getting people to have a laugh at it. Well at least these is how the political leaders would like to have believed, or being led to believe so ! :)

Ps: yes maybe we should have atm machines in our police stations after all! Maybe all the 7 elevens should be at the police stations ! :)

A looming economic crisis

This 16th june newsweek frontpage just says it all

While we malaysians squabble on local politics, the world at large are jittering with a possible global recession looming at large

Will the global recession affect us all?

Or more importantly, will a decline of the us economy, our biggest trade partner over the last many years, hit us hard where it hurt most? (Read the tummy and pocket)

I remember a mckinsey s partner from china whom I met almost 3 4 months ago saying that the old saying that when "america sneezes, asia catches cold" , may not apply anymore. Why? Because we asians now have our very own protection in the form of the great vitamin "C".

Yes, u guessed it right. C for CHINA.

Notwithstanding the fact that he was talking way back 3 to 4 months ago when relatively the "atmosphere " of the situation was not that bad (and I stress atmosphere because really, apart from the increase in petrol inflation, we have yet to see a real economic crash), I do personally feel that we malaysians must now realise that a more macro economic challenge is up ahead. And we thought petrol price going up was bad..

Will china help us (asia/asean) deter a crashing domino effect from the already faltering us economy? Personaly I doubt it very much.

George wehfritz calls china the black hole of our financial universe, a vacuum of supposed financial opportunity gobbling as much liquidity unimaginable before.but will all this flush of funds stay amids the current change of status quo of global economy, and more importantly, is a heated china do well after all as our very own vitamin c?

I'm a believer of micro managing the economy. The national leaders have a strong duty in the cming troubled times to show strong leadership to steer our domestic economy, because no matter what happens to our neighbours, it is how we manage ours that will matter for our people.
By strong leadership I mean in the understanding of what it takes to re ignite the local economic activities and making sure the effects are trickling down.

Strong leadership also means that leaders do not blame it easy on the so called ' global situation '. Yes the global situation is bad, but hey, tough luck, you re the leader, solve the problem. No body pushed you for the job, not most of us at least.

Incompetencies in micromanaging the economy in the upcoming difficult times will almost certainly be considered a crime to the rakyat, not least of the fact that supposedly we would have learnt from our mistakes/successes in the 1998 crisis.

I do not believe that just because we have an ever increasing national reserves (gold, foreign currencies and trade surpluses) , that we would have a more resilient economy.

In times of recession, I think that it is not so much about how much money you have, but how much of those are spent wisely ( and wisely encapsulates the micro activity of making sure our ahmads, ah chong and arumugam gets a feel of them).

I understand recession as a stage when money "stops travelling", or maybe a bit more less than it used to. Less people gets to feel that one ringgit as it is not moving from one hand to another, hence creating less value, and another less numerical digit for that national statistic on the gdp.

Mahathir understood this very well.maybe a bit too obsessed with it sometimes.

I remember rather well that when we were in 1998, a lot of money was pumped into national projects, albeit at a much smaller scale.

Recently, a jkr director who is now working for a private construction company said to me that during those years, instead of starting work only when the project drawings are submitted and approved, it was the other way round.

" the instruction from the top was simple. Give the contractors the money and make sure work continues. When the bridge is built, hand in the drawings later"

This build first, money first, drawing et al coming in later is what I mean by mahathir's supposed obsession in the understanding that as long as we ensure that the ringgit's travelling path are not hindered with unnecessary bureaucracy, then maybe , just maybe we would be able to withstand global recession with crude yet effective micro economic money pumping and trickling it down to the three ah's - ahmad, ah chong and arumugam.

I don't usually agree with the grand old man of malaysia, but sometimes you cannot deny his sheer brilliance in managing a 100billion company called malaysia ( yes that was our worth by the mid 90's or so).

1 ringgit transferring from ahmad, to ah chong, and then to arumugam (no racial/prejudicial connotation intended) would mean that at the end, the value of 3 ringgit is generated through the most basic assumption of micro economy.

This monees that they receive will go through the tills at the local mydin's, which then goes to the local farmer, who uses it to give to his child as daily pocket money, who spends it at the school canteen, who s owner using it to buy more local groceries.. And the money keeps on travelling..

Do this at the largest scale, with careful monetary policy to avoid stagflation, would most probaby bring resilience, if not development to our 24 million people based economy.

Why keep 45 billion or so in the reserve when u should spend some of it to spur the local econimic activity?

But then the question is : are the public works being contracted to the lowest 'denomination' of the people?

Or are we still obsessed in awarding the contracts to a few who might just end up buying a house in london that means more malaysian ringgit flowing out of this country?

I have always believed that it is so much better that public economic projects are denominated to lowest and widest possible group of people.

Yes they may not be as competent as the big ones, but what's the point of giving a 1 billion projects to one particular joker when he ends up spending that money buying yet another apartment along hyde park, while using parts of if to pay for the wife's (or wives) shopping spree at selfridges and the 2 kid's 25 thousand pounds a term tuition fees at Oundel or Concorde?

This is the very failure of public expenditure that has to be avoided.

As a matter of fact, I don't mind if that 1 billion man is given the project, albeit him spending it for a grand house in puchong setia (built by local contractors using local stuff), makes sure the wife spends only at midvalley or the local sundry shop and sending the school to sk puchong jaya (ok maybe we can make an exception to them being sent to sri cempaka).

Understandably enough, I have yet to hear any of these jokers doing this. Well who could resist London?definitely not me.

I'm going off tangent...

Anyways.

Point is the future will be worse than you think ( yes don't believe those propaganda that everything will be fine) and really, the lower and the bleaker the expectation that you have of the future, the better it is for you, personally. A soft landing is always better than a crash.either way we are heading down.

What hyperinflation?

I was in the uk recently.

Like malaysia, the newspapers were all talks abt inflation/hyperinflation and the sudden surge in energy prices (read oil)..

PM gordon brown has even outlined a plan to urge saudi and opec to increase production, although the saudis, like all the rest of them lots, blame it on the bloody speculators (sounds familiar?) Brown even went further to suggest that a more sustainable energy source (read nuclear) is now inevitably the imminent solution to the looming problem (what abt the ever increasing industrial and consumer wants?is that not a problem, or the problem ?)

Anyways, I am always amazed by how critical the british ppl are of everything, their govt, their country, and more often than not, of their own royalties.it is one of those peculiarities which describes, their so called, britishness.

In particular over my recent trip, was the increasing criticism thrown at mervyn king the governor of boe and alastair darling the chancellor of the exchequer in their supposed failure in controling inflation ( or hyperinflation- as how the tabloids likes to word it)

But I was left wondering to myself as I stroll down oxford street, because contrary to the so called popular local belief that the average spending power of the average middle class britons have been cut back, the shops were still jam packed with people, and the summer sales arrived on time, like it always do.

I even managed to buy myself, another pair of my favourite airwalk snickers, for a mind boggling price of 1 pound!! (See picture)

So why the hype of hyperinflation?

this is the classic example of british people being over critically british (is that gram correct?) and in my opinion , rightly so.

Britons usually spend only 10 to 15 percent of their income towards food and bills.and now they have to fork out almost 20 percent for their food and bills (cars and transport included).

for them, that is a huge amount since they still have allocation for other 'essentials' such as mortgage (20 percent) entertainment (10 percent) holidays (15percent) and so on and so forth.

We malaysians spend more than 50percent of our income on food and home bills (and sometimes this doesn't include our car installment and petrol).

Mortgage? Most malaysians are renting until almost through their early thirties.

Holiday? What holiday? Cuti cuti malaysia also we cannot afford. Maybe boleh jalan europa or jalan jalan subang jaya (hitz fm advert)

My point is this.

The british people are screaming like mad to their government,to their mps and and to their financial institutions, over an inflation that has affected a mere 5 to 10 percent of their monthly wages.

While we malaysians, are being affected many folds than that by looming inflation, and yet , we ... ? (Sila isi tempat kosong)

Public transport in uk is brilliant, and yet they complain that petrol price is at 1.30 of their currencies unit. And they are not even a bloody net exporter.

The university system is top of the world league, and they still complain that across the atlantic the ivy league are collecting billions in endowments allowing making it more affordable for less privileged to enter them.

Their mp s and cabinet ministers are scrutinised more than britney spears, and yet they still complain abt them..

The result is, their whole system gets better and better, all the time.when u think there is no more room for improvement (or criticism) u ll always be dumbfounded that the british will find one.

So what about us?

Are we content with yes its ok lah..

Sometimes maybe the standard of what is good, is not really good enough.

Patronising friday khutbahs'

Every friday we muslims in malaysia go in droves to the masjid to listen to the friday sermons (khutbahs) and perform the friday prayers

And every friday when I listen to the khutbahs , I can't help but feel annoyed at the level of 'maturity' and 'intelligence' the content of the khutbahs and the way the khatib/imam delivers it. To put it simpley, it is outright patronising.

Let us first look at the topics of the khutbah delivered.

More often than not, the content of the khutbah itself are an insult to our intelligence because it usually concerns of issues so minute and insignificant, that members of the audience couldn't be bothered with.

Take this week. Bapa mithali. I assume this is because father s day is not many days away from now.

But what is so significant about bapa mithali??

How many of the audience are interested to listen to a lecture abt bapa mithali??

Islamist has to be real and updated to world challenges, and so does the khutbah s delivered every week.

Shouldn't we be talking abt the challenges of a world facing with energy crisis? Shoudlt we be questioning why is the muslim world, who owns almost 60percent of the known oil reserves, are the worst affected by the current energy crisis? And shouldn't we be talking abt how islam itself is a religion which speaks of a world that is too consumed by worldly matters, that it is a reminder for us all that there is a limit to everything?

And we want to talk abt bapa mithali?

How stupid we malaysian islamist are sometimes.

The problem is, how can we have a khutbah speech which is more updated to the current issues, when the very people who writes those khutbah's are the very islamist who are katak di bawah tempurung that even though they studied overseas (read al azhar) they only mix with malaysians, and they don't even have friends, who are not malaysians. Pi mai pi mai, tang tu jugak.

To make it even worse, more often than not we get really old imams, who reads the sermon, word by word.no intonation whatsoever. Well not that our national leader don't do the same.

We should send this imams to the toastmasters club or something!!

At least, have some energy lah in delivering the khutbah.khutbah are suppose to be fiery and motivating, not a sleeping pill!

With this kind of topics and this kind of imams, they expect us, the mamums not to fall asleep during the khutbahs?

I think I'm gonna fall asleep now..

Today, I had the privelege of attending a dialogue with the uk's foreign and commonwealth's office parliamentary under secretary ms meg munn, mp for sheffield hailey.

Not as well attended as it shud be, I thought the speaker spoke quite well.

Bar my anglophilic biasness, surprisingly enough for a lady who s experience before becoming an mp was in social community work (albeit having a degree from nottingham), I think she did extremely well talking abt uk s foreign policy. Not an enviable nor popular subject/position to talk abt!

Anyways, I was just wondering if more malaysian mp s who makes it into cabinet cud have been as eloquent/convincing.

not to forget that she was so informal minus the entourage that usually follow a malaysian cabinet member (Or deputy ministers for that matter)

The tun ship, my verdict:

Tun hamid omar - chief justice of malaysia, he deserves it lah, hope he can reform judiciary.

Tun ahmad sarji - former ksn, chairmans of like a zillion companies in malaysia, inc the malay mentality pnb. Does he merit a tun ship? Contribution to malaysia?

Tun lim kheng yaik - gerakan maestro, malaysia for malaysia man, one of the best ministers malaysia has ever seen, totally deserve it.

Why no tun ship for one of the grand old man of malaysia, tengki razaleigh? He founded bank bumi for the malays (albeit it being destroyed by others later), he created pernas for the malay sme s (albeit it being bought by others later), and he, almost singlehandedly, under the instruction of tun razak, created the biggest cash cow of malaysia, PETRONAS (albeit those who were victors, denied him in petronas history? ) Then again, maybe I'm biased because I'm kelantanese (in the words of brother anwar)

Tan sri ships , my verdict

Tan sri azman mokhtar - ceo of khazanah nasional malaysia, totally merits the tan sri ship, done job well in khazanah, albeit some sour grapes might say he is still young (below 50). Lest we forget, we had industrialist like tan sri halim saad,tan sri tajudin ramli, and tan sri yahya ahmad, who was way younger than him when they were conferred tan sri ship. Read tan sri azman s reply to tan sri adam kadir in this week s the edge page 60. Classic stuff! :)

Dismisses corruption claim, but the ksu of his ministry now meringkup in jail, the businessman involve now apparently hiding in hadyai. Also sent his possible challenger in the coming bahagian election to "political holiday" in putrajaya? U judge yourself.

Contribution of "tan sri" anuar musa to malaysia or malaysian people (or even kelantan for that matter) to merit him receiving the tan sri ship?

Amongst my friends, I am one of the few who still supports and voted for barisan nasional ( read umno)

As a matter of fact, during the last general election, I did not find a single person amongst my immediate peers who voted for barisan .

Even some of my loyal umnoristas voted for the pakatan rakyat, simply because the bn candidates in their constituencies were deemed as useless, incompetent or just not good looking enough (read old). The last one is in particular to the area of dun subang jaya and parlimen pantai dalam (where many young voters/gen y people voted for the more pretty yet charismatic dap hannah yeoh and pkr's nurul izzah, who for the past 2 months was on the front page of almost all the malay magazines in town)

I think the so called 49 percent of the voters in semenanjung malaysia, inc myself, who still and maybe , will always do support barisan nasional, must have felt a bit betrayed by the reality that we have all woken up to today.

Is this what we voted for?

I hope the govt realise, that yes we do the people do realise that the hike in petrol price was inevitable.

We also do realise, that even at rm 2 70 per litter, we are still the cheapest in the region (thailand is at rm 4).oh how lucky we malaysians..

But I wonder whether the govt realises that we the people are actually angry not only at the surprise of this announcement, but also by the most patronising way we were led into this?

Only 2 days ago, the govt said, no we are not going to increase petrol price. It will be in august.

Mentally, I think we malaysians were prepared for august.

And suddenly, in the most literal way possible, u just dropped the bombshell on us just like that!

We had barely less than 7 hours after the announcement to be informed that price will hike by more than 40percent!

how are we the people expected to except this with an open mind?? Even the most educated of malaysians would demand a gradual increase, simply because we the people need time to adjust to our supposedly 'lavish living' ! ( Well not that we travel around in private jets and have houses in london, sydney or perth)

I would have backed the govt if last night, it was up by even 30cents.

But 80 cents ?? That's just midnight robbery (literrally!)

We the people, must stand united to scrutinise where this money 'saved' will go to.

4 billion, at least, will go to dasar jaminan bekalan makanan negara.

I have never trusted my ringgit on govt expenditure, simply because many usually goes to exhorbitant over priced project, that usually goes to the same ahmad or abu.

But since I am a barisan nasional supporter, I will give them the last benefit of doubt.

6 months time from now, we will revisit.

As a parting shot, I ask also for us the rakyat to think (hint hint to the govt), well since we are now paying higher petrol price and more expensive food in subsequence, why the hell are we the rakyat,especially the people in the cities, still paying sky rocketing toll prices??

Don't all the toll money go to the govt anyways, especially through companies like plus? We already have increased income through less petrol subsidy and soaring petrol prices (less we forget we are net oil exporter), so why is the rakyat still be made to burden it all?

I think now, more than ever, we the people has the right to say

REDUCE TOLL PRICES!

Apparently, some rich genius sent a box containing a gps receiver all over the world, with specific instructions of the route, using dhl
And then the laptop charted the movement of the box, hence the drawing
Although its logical, but its rather dubious if u look at the supposed 'route' taken by the ship, plane, or van that carried the box.

Pulau Batu Putih and Singapore

I was away for work when i received the text message from my mom on Friday evening

She was furious when she found out we lost the Pulau Batu Putih aka Pedra Branca case to Singapore

On my blackberry i was receiving endless emails and txt, most of it from angry malay malaysians

"Bodoh punyer kerajaan, tuh lah hantar lagi AG yang jaguh kampung, lawan dengan lawyer Singapore yang world class" to quote one of them.

To be fair, i think many malaysians, especially Malay Malaysians are very emotional when it comes to the word Singapore.

I admit that I dont know Singapore that well, prior to my current posting, and my first time to Singapore was actually last December.

My take on the Pulau Batu Putih case is very simple.

Yes, we probably could have prepared a better argument, but logically i think we have lost our chance almost 50 years ago.

The island was under the control of the British Singapore Colonial Office post independence, and obviously the letter as per above by the now infamous acting state secretary of Johor, M Seth bin Saaid is merely academic since it was written to the Colonial Office in Singapore only in agreement to what was the situation at that time (the light house was already under the administration of the british)

Some of my friends argued that we should have questioned the authority of this mr M Seth. Furthermore, the territory was obviously under Johore, and much further from Singapore.

But as much as this argument is logical, legally i dont think it has much weight.

At the end, the real question we should be asking is that why is it between 1957 to 2008, there was no official persistent protest from our government re the island? Even after Singapore was annexed from Malaysia, there was not much protest.

This i think is the essence of the argument from the ICJ.

Of course its a bit thorny that we now have a Singaporean outpost in our own territory.

But lets be a bit rational too.

If true Singapore is going to have strategic advantage towards Malaysia, be it military wise or what not, what would a mere stupid island be of any difference? Dont we all know what military prowess that they already have in terms of technological advancement?

In the end, i think its boils down to one thing.

Like any good football match, no one wants to go home as the losers

and all football matches, are just, well football matches.

I think if we are going to be carried away with this anger towards the singaporeans, we should really be channeling our anger in the right direction.

why do we waste of time cursing them for the things that they achieve, which really, is nothing related to us anyways?

I notice that Singaporeans dont really care about Malaysia. Well maybe they are a bit scared when we get nervy on issues such as this Pulau Batu Putih ( one Singaporean official who i had lunch with recently said that they are even thinking of preparing the citizens on any "possibilities" if Singapore was announced the winner)

I really think Singaporeans are really straightforward, kiasu and less emotional group of people than us. Well it can be of good or bad thing for them as well. Obviously they have used all this traits for the better.

I think we Malaysians should the same. We are very emotional, patriotic, hardworking (to some extent) and clever (to some extent) group of people. but i dont think we have channeled this anger or emotion or patriotism to the right cause especially when it comes to Singapore.

I have always said to my friends that my approach to Singapore is simple.

We have to be competitive and compete with Singapore, on every issue

I dont believe in all this nonsense that we complement them this and that

We must compete, heads on with singapore!

But competition doesnt mean that we are at war with them

Competition i think means that we must do our research and look at them properly

What do they do best, and what can we copy from them?

I dont understand why we malaysia cannot just copy from Singapore what they do best

Many people or officials in Malaysia, if we mention singapore, oh cannot cannot

but how to beat singapore in their own game when u dont even know how they play the game?

i dont think we Malaysians are any stupider than the Singaporeans

as a matter of fact, i think in terms of brain power, we are almost leveled

sometimes, i also feel that many malaysians who have brain, are better than singaporeans in terms of speaking skills , pr etc

but the problem is, we dont want to admit that as much as we hate singapore, we must also learn from them

and the funny thing is, singapore is so open about the things they do in terms of economy, education, transport that we can download all their policies from the internet!

i notice malaysian govt officials like to do working trip or study trip to London, what they learn also i dont know, but if you think about it, dont you think we malaysians should be learning from singapore, more than the british?

even the british wants to learn from singapore, and we want to learn from the british?

and singapore is our bloody neighbour!

we should even have a department in our intelligentsia on what to copy from singapore

then we dont have to waste time and money engaging all this consultants (many whom are based in Singapore anyways) on how to improve this ministry or that ministry

there is so much to learn from this singaporeans

most of it really is just common sense

but then again, common sense in malaysia is not as common as it is in Singapore

we need to fight singapore in this terms

not just cakap mulut bising bising, but then after a week, we dont do anything

im so convinced that we can really be at par with singapore if we get our act together

lets start by comparing the universities for example

lets pit UM v NUS

and put all our resources and thinking on how we can make sure UM beats NUS in the world rankings

copy from NUS what they do

steal the NUS professors if you need to

bribe them for the best tips if you have to

just do what ever you need to do , as long as UM can beat NUS!

im sure we can do it!

but we must choose our battles properly. We cant win on every front, but slowly but surely, if we concentrate, learn from singapore, we can one day beat them using their own strategies!

one more thing

forget about the past and forget about the politics

it will do us no good

this is especially for malay malaysians who just hate singapore's guts

for you guys out there, my advice is , if you hate singapore so much, then work hard for malaysia to be better than singapore lah

why cant we admit that yes, we thought by annexing Singapore, we were throwing them into hell's pit, but man, we were so wrong. move on lah.

we must also realise, that people or nation who are made to suffer, always emerge stronger. nations who are always on subsidy, will always be in bolehland..

but moving on..

now we know that Malaysia is behind Singapore on so many things, we need to put our act together, emotions aside, we must learn from singapore, to beat singapore

what is so wrong with that?

at the end of the day, it does not matter who plays the most beautiful football, it does not matter if you steal their best players, it does not matter if you copy their football tactics, what matters is who won the football match! Nobody remembers how you did it!

maybe malaysia should be like manchester united

strong, organised, yes we may not play beautiful football, but we get things done!

and yes, we are also now Premiership and European Champion League Winners!

Well, not that I want to condone what she did, but I feel that whenever I read this kind of press report, there is certainly a feeling of hypocrisy lingering.

And believe you me, I have heard many people saying this (esp govt servants) - oh kalau bilis yang buat kena, jerung makan lagi besar terlepas!

Many of those caught are malay civil servants

So this hyporcracy is a real phenomenon in the malay circle

Many malay civil servants are fed up that they are always accused of taking up bribes easily.well the fact that quite a number of them do , doesn't really help as well to quell the perception

But over and above this, what is more evident is that many malay civil servants are angry that 'bigger fish' or jerung are left uncaught

What is 64 000 compared to 64 million or 640 000?

I'm sure we all know many senior malay politicians who has houses in london or perth or sydney (for their children to use when they further their studies) . And most of this houses are worth more than a million ringgit.

You ( read the bpr) don't even need a calculator to conclude how impossible it is for this politicians to amass such wealth, unless of course they are tycoons themselves (well not that I know of)

So instead of going for the big catch, u make do with catching this small anchovies (bilis) just because they are no vvip.

I bet this issue alone has turned off many malay voters against umno.

In umno we have leaders who talks abt bersederhana, ber jiwa rakyat, ber jimat cermat, and all the ber s that u can think of, and yet they are the ones who travel arounds in bentleys and private jets.

Many former minister s who have absconded millions of their ministries allocations are still on the loose.

What is the follow up from the revelation by the national auditor that some ministry spent rm 3OOO for a box of pencils or scre drivers?

The problem with our fellow islamist

it is really frustrating for me to read issues like this played out in the gallery

I consider myself very much an islamist, one which is very proud at it, although I doubt most of us brothers and sisters in the so called islamist world agree on the same thing

Usually I'd say that we the islamist are in aim of a more islamic world, well whatever that is..

Anyways, I did read the statement made earlier by a particular ikhwani sister, ms munirah bahari

Well on a personal level I do believe she s a very friendly sister

But as I read her statement on behalf of a particular ikhwani msian group, I thot to myself, please I hope no one reads it as well

The statement was something along the lines that the school uniform for girls in white are too transparent and sexy

I will not dwell into the criticism that are in the news today, in response to the statement above

But I wud like to urge fellow islamist in malaysia to really look around you, and listen to what people are saying

More often than not I find many fellow islamist, lost in their own world, not realising the changing malaysian public, which is supposedly their forte in carrying out whatever islamic modus operandi that they believe ( as there are many groups amongst us islamist)

Many islamist make this kind of sweeping statements because we are also unable to realise that in the art of da'wah there is also the need for diplomacy and understanding the sensitivity of the public

2 weeks ago, I was stunned when I read another fellow islamist group saying that we are a 'malay muslim group'. I was so furious that I confronted the president himself (in a good way) to ask him since when we islamist become malay first before muslim??

What if ure a chinese muslims? Does that make u second class muslims in malaysia??

I am absolutely gutted by the work the islamist are turning into now in malaysia

Sometimes I don't know whether they are talking as a right wing malay, or just an ignorant islamist

Islam certainly doesn't condone racism, whatever form it is

Next time if we the islamist wants to make any statement

Nurul izzah has been coming out on the frontpage of almost every single popular magazine in town that one can be forgiven to mistaken that we are not in the golden anwaristas year of 1995!

Before this she also came out on the front page of off the edge (twice) not to mention the other more liberal magazines

But I'm really surprised that even the editorials of nona (which has a circulation of more than 500K a month) esp amongst the very key women voters in this country, has now 'moved on' in putting anwar and izzah on their frontpage!

there s only two ways to look at this :

1) Either we are moving to a more open malaysia (which is good)

2) Or the editors now realise that they better put their bet, where the vote is ( or in their case, where their readers put their vote in ! :)

After goading Umno members today to temporarily resign from Umno as a sign of protest against the party president, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took up a “dare” to take the lead by resigning from the party he had been a founding member of since 1946. However, he implored Umno members taking up his challenge not to join any other party and remain independent, at least until the Umno leadership was determined (after the December party elections). He indicated that he will only rejoin the party when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi steps down as Umno president. Dr Mahathir, an Umno life member, was answering questions from the floor after giving a talk at a forum entitled 'Future of the Malays after the 12th General Election' at the Star City Hotel in Alor Star, organised by the Kedah Malay Assembly Hall, when a member of the audience asked him if he would take the lead in quitting Umno.

Identifying himself as Ismail Jaziz, he asked Dr Mahathir if he would take the lead since he had mooted the idea. To this, Dr Mahathir, in a serious tone said: “Waa, saya di cabar ni…(looks like I have been dared). Yes, I will leave Umno...until the party leadership is determined. Other Umno members should follow me.”

Loud cheers erupted from the 1,500 attendees, which included assembly chairman Tan Sri Khalid Ahmad, Jerlun Umno division chairman Datuk Abdul Rahman Ariffin, State Assemblyman for Kuala Nerang Datuk Syed Sobri Syed Hashim, State Assemblywoman for Sungai Tiang Suraya Yaacob and former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid.

What a disastrous evening

I didn't have a car today so I had to resort to public transport

I was looking forward to going back to shah alam by komuter

Our irda office in kl is also at kl sentral so that's makes it even more easier

I left the office at 8pm thinking that there will not be that many people at the komuter platform

Well, I was wrong

Two scheduled train before the one I'm waiting for was delayed/missing in action.no explanation was given

So we all waiting anxiously for the third one and the platform barely cud house more people.and mind u , again, its 8pm already. I felt like it was 6pm. I cannot imagine how it probably was at 6pm.

When the train came, we all starting doing the malaysian queing system (read berebut rebut) and finally we are all ready to go towards pelabuhan klang

And believe you me, we were all left speechless when the driver made an announcement that this train is actually going towards seremban (and it was on the right side of the track) and I'm like what the hell??? although I used to take the komuter before when I was in smapk (kajang to subang) and when I was in alevels (shah alam to kl) this has never ever happened before!

So I thot , that's it I'm taking the freaking cab. I was already late for dinner with kat and nazmi and keith, so I had no choice lah.

What was more amazing is how people didn't seem to be complaining abt it!

I hope its because they are tired from work

I think its also because they know even if they complain, what change will it make, buang karan jer.so just do what pm says, initiate change at the ballot box.

Even worse, I wanted to complain also I didn't even know where to complain as there wasn't any platform attendant on duty??

I tell you, we shud tell everyone, from now on, those who take komuter goes to work bawak sebijik telur busuk. Kalau train lambat or train buat onar macam tadik, kita ramai ramai balik telur busuk dekat train tuh.tak pun baling telur busuk dekat pejabat ktmb yang bodoh tuh yang tak pernah ada orang.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Lingam video clip has recommended that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad be investigated under various laws for his role in the appointment of judges.

Other persons also named to face possible action are former chief justices Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim and Eusoff Chin, senior lawyer VK Lingam, former minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and business tycoon Vincent Tan.

In its 191-page report, the commission recommended that they be investigated under a slew of laws - Sedition Act, Official Secrets Act, Penal Code and obstruction of justice.

De facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim today said that the cabinet has directed the Attorney General's Chambers to institute immediate investigations against the six.

Earlier, Zaid said that the government has decided to release the commission's report to the public.

The four-volume report will be sold at RM542.10 and be available next week.

While volume one - which is the report itself - has only 191 pages, volume two containing the notes of evidence is 1,187-page long, while volume three has all the statutory declarations submitted to the commission (513 pages) and the final volume contains the exhibits (998 pages).

Copies of the report were not distributed to the media today but a ministerial aide read out one paragraph.

"We are of the view that there was conceivably an insidious movement by VK Lingam with covert assistance of his close friends Vincent Tan and Tengku Adnan Mansor to involve themselves actively in the appointment of judges, in particular the appointment of Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim as President of the Court of Appeal, and subsequently as the Chief Justice."

Oil reserves to run out by 2014

Net oil exporter Malaysia will become a net energy importer of oil and gas by 2014 as its own reserves eventually runs out, news reports said today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Amirsham Aziz said based on the current oil extraction methods by state energy firm Petronas, the crude oil and oil condensates were expected to last for 22 years, the New Straits Times daily reported.

Gas reserves would last for a longer period of 39 years, Amirsham said.

"Although it looks like the reserves period is long, the reality is the country is also importing oil and gas to partly cater to the local demand," he was quoted as saying by the daily.

"Therefore, the country is expected to become a net importer of energy in the near term projected to be by 2014," he said in Parliament.

He said the price of petroleum and gas products exported by Petronas are based on world market prices but prices of fuel in the domestic market was sold on prices partly fixed by the government.

Fuel costs are a thorny subject in Malaysia, after a series of hikes last year triggered widespread anger and contributed to a huge vote swing in favour of the opposition in the recent March polls after the latter promised to lower fuel prices during election campaigns.

The government currently pays hefty fuel subsidies which is expected to hit up to RM45 billion this year on soaring world crude oil prices.

It is certainly so frustrating for the many thousands who rely on commuters

The government tells us to use public transport

But they give us a crap public transport

Then we all have to fork out many to drive

Then we all have to drive crap local cars cause all the good cars have to pay 300percent tax to protect 3 or 4 malay auto industrialist

At the same time, 3 or 4 malay ap kings who control the good cars import takes helicopter to play golf

So where is the justice? (Read keadilan)

Many people depend on ktm komuter and lrt.we spend at least 30billion a year to make roads (and most of it goes to malay (read umno) contractors.why can't we spend some of the money to buy more ktm komuter cars or lrt cars?

1 billion could be used to buy at least 100 ktm cars! Yes, I inquired my transport consultant friends who says one of those ktm cars cost only 10million (well not that 10m is cheap for a train carriage!)

For goodness sake (read political sake) let's do something right for the people!

We can't wait 4 more years, by then we might be pembangkang already!

(Well not that we are govt in selangor or even kl!) Lest u forget!

Saya sentiasa rasa tabloid sebegini, walaupun sangat popular sekali di kalangan orang melayu ( jualan tertinggi setiap tahun) , namun bagi saya ianya salah satu punca orang kita tidak terdedah dengan editorial yang lebih analitikal dan memikir.

Saya terkejut kerana di muka akhir bahagian sukan metro ahad,rupanya ada dua muka surat penuh yang dedikasi untuk iklan langganan melalui sms untuk mendapatkan keputusan judi 4d, sports toto dan lumba kuda!

Bukan kah harian metro dan metro ahad ini rata rata pembacanya orang melayu , terutamanya golongan muda melayu islam?

Kalau ada yang lupa, judi adalah haram disisi islam.

Kenapa terang terangan akhbar melayu menyokong iklan seumpama ini?

Tidak cukupkah akhbar akhbar ini menghancurkan jati diri anak muda melayu islam kita dengan pelbagai berita hiburan yang biasanya merangkumi satu pertiga akhbar tabloid sebgini? Sekarang sudah ada cara dan iklan nak berjudi melalui sms pula ??

Pemimpin melayu bising apabila konon nya "musuh" di luar sana mencabar "ketuanan melayu" yang entah apa dia.

Walhal ramai lagi orang kita sendiri yang lebih "aktif" dan terbuka dalam menghancurkan anak bangsa sendiri.

Terang terangan lagi.

Jadi siapakah musuh kita yang lebih besar? Yang di luar sana, atau di depan mata?

Tidak silap Awang istilah ketuanan Melayu muncul sebelum merdeka ketika orang Melayu iaitu kaum asal tanah air ini menentang penindasan penjajah.Selepas merdeka, penggunaannya lebih bersifat gagasan bagi menggerakkan pencapaian orang Melayu dan agar kekal sebagai peneraju kuasa. Sudah tentu ia sedikit sebanyak tidak dapat lari daripada semangat kontrak sosial dan realiti Melayu adalah kaum teras. Di Indonesia, etnik Jawa adalah teras, begitu juga kaum Cina di Singapura - itulah realitinya. Maka ketuanan Melayu bukan bermakna kaum lain hamba. Janganlah ambil pusing apatah lagi takut dengan ungkapan sedemikian. Sejarah membuktikan bahawa Melayu cukup baik hati termasuk sanggup berkongsi status kewarganegaraan biarpun kerajaan British pernah mahu menghantar pulang kaum imigran.Lagipun realitinya hari ini orang Melayu jauh ketinggalan berbanding kaum Cina yang menguasai ekonomi terutama di bandar dan pekan. Hey Wan Firdaus,Thanks for posting this article on your blog. FYI, we did mention that Hadi will be given a post of the DPM together with Kit Siang in an earlier article. It goes without saying that a Pakatan government would have Anwar as the prime minister. Given that in Penang, the Pakatan state government has two deputy chief ministers and that there would have also been two deputy menteris besar in Perak and Selangor if not for royal intervention, we believe Anwar would have two DPMs.In such a scenario, one of the DPMs would be from DAP and the other from PAS (Lim Kit Siang and Hadi Awang respectively). Anwar would also make it clear that in the event that he become incapacitated, the prime minister's position would be filled by another MP from PKR and not from DAP or PAS.The politically correct reason for this is that the PM should come from the biggest component party, and in the Pakatan, that would be PKR. The realpolitik reason is to assuage fear amongst Malays and non-Malays that DAP's Lim Kit Siang and PAS' Abdul Hadi Awang respectively, might actually become the PM.

Being a PAS member myself, I tend to agree that PAS should decide the fate of Hj Hadi's position soon. Maybe it is appropriate to put him in majlis syura etc, as this would not serve as a downgrade to him.Hj Hadi should also look into himself. He should start looking at the prospect of him being DPM, and assess if that would be benificial for Pakatan Rakyat.One the other hand, I believe many PAS members (and central committee) are aware of this, and if PAS is offered one DPM post, most probably it would not be Hj Hadi, regardless of his position

many of my PAS friends didnt believe me when i said that non malays dont trust PAS president ustaz hadi. many felt that i was being unfair when i said that ustaz hadi is one of the conundrum that pakatan rakyat is having. As president of PAS, surely they would demand he be given the post of DPM or something up there, if pakatan becomes government. From the article by Ong Kian Ming and Oon Yeoh below, i think i was being too kind in my previous article. Ong and Oon says that ustaz hadi doesnt even have the right "public image" to be a senior cabinet minister and do not have the trust of non Muslim (see article below). at least i thought Hadi should be somewhere in the cabinet, but Ong and Oon seems to suggest that hadi doesnt deserve anything?? (they didnt even end their bit on hadi in the article below)

as I always say to my PAS friend, buang jer ustaz hadi tuh. move forward. maybe you guys also need to have a ' lets have a new president campaign?' :)

on a different note, i think it is rather politically shortsighted on the part of Ong and Oon NOT TO suggest that at least one DPM post will go to PAS.

Shadow cabinet: Possible PAS ministers

For the last article in our five-part series on the Pakatan Rakyat shadow cabinet, we look at the smallest component party, PAS, which has 23 members of parliament. It will presumably will be given the fewest cabinet positions of the three parties precisely because it is the smallest one. We estimate it'll have between five to seven ministers.

The allocation within PAS is probably the least challenging amongst the three Pakatan parties because it does not have the unique problems that the other two parties have. It doesn't have a large number of incumbent MPs like DAP. Nor does it have to cope with the delicate ethnic balancing act that PKR has to contend with.

At the top of its leadership structure is PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang who recaptured the seat of Marang in the recent election, a seat which he had lost in 2004. It makes sense for him to be given the most senior cabinet position allocated to PAS.

The big challenge with Hadi is that his public image and demeanor – which has served him so well within PAS and among rural Malays in the northern states – are also the very things that make it difficult to assign a suitable senior cabinet post for him.

For example, his manner of dressing, with his flowing robes and Taliban-styled headgear, would probably not suit him (or Malaysia) well as the foreign minister or tourism minister. It's hard to imagine him as being suitable for any role which requires him to meet with international investors or be seen in an international setting. It simply sends the wrong impression of the country.

Based on his education or background, which is religious studies, it's also difficult to identify a cabinet position befitting his senior status. The non-Malays would probably be alarmed if he was made home minister or education minister and nothing in his background suggests he's suitable for finance or defence.

A PAS leader with a greater degree of flexibility when it comes to cabinet positions is PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa (right), who defeated Awang Adek, former Tenaga chairman and Kelantan Menteri Besar designate (if BN had won) in the seat of Bachok. Nasharuddin will likely be allocated a relatively senior cabinet position. We could easily imagine him taking up the education, foreign or works portfolio.

The other PAS MPs who have senior leadership positions include PAS secretary-general Kamaruddin Jaafar (Tumpat), a three-term MP who switched from Umno to PAS in 1999 because of his close association with Anwar Ibrahim; Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub (Kubang Kerian), a two-term MP; information chief Mahfuz Omar (Pokok Sena), who won this seat in 1999 but lost it in 2004 because of changes in the boundaries of his constituency; treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli (Kuala Kerai), a dentist by training who almost won the parliamentary seat of Gombak in 1999 and was shifted to a more winnable seat in Kelantan this time around.

Vice-president Husam Musa (right) and director of elections operations Mustafa Ali are two non-MP but cabinet-quality leaders who could be made senators so that they can be given cabinet positions. Husam, who at one time was widely touted to take over Nik Aziz Nik Mat as the MB of Kelantan, has hinted that he is willing to take on a more prominent position at the federal level and wants to project a more moderate image of PAS.

If Pakatan does form the federal government, do not discount the possibility that Husam might give up his state exco position for a federal position. Mustafa, who lost a state seat in Terengganu in the recent election, is seen as a steady pair of hands, and would undoubtedly be an important asset to PAS at the federal level.

Two potential women MPs

Finally, look for one of the two women PAS MPs to be allocated a cabinet position. Dr Siti Maria Mahmud (Kota Raja) and Dr Lo’Lo Mohamad Ghazali (Titiwangsa) (right) have important roles to play within PAS not just because they are female leaders in a party that has a poor public image when it comes to women's rights but also because they are MPs in relatively mixed constituencies. PAS would do well to promote its female MPs in order to present a more modern, mainstream and progressive image of the party.

It's worth highlighting that Pakatan in general does not have many female MPs and even fewer who are suited for cabinet positions. DAP has Chong Eng and PKR has Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. It would make sense for PAS to nominate one of its female MPs for at least a deputy minister position.

To recap, we think senior cabinet positions would go to Hadi and Nasharuddin. The next tier would be Kamaruddin, Salahuddin, Mahfuz and Hatta. We anticipate that either Husam or Mustafa might get cabinet positions via the senatorship route. And finally, one of the two female MPs might get a deputy minister position.

Dark horses would be Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (head of the PAS research centre) (left) and Khalid Abdul Samad (brother of BN’s Shahrir) both of whom have been working hard to build bridges with the non-Muslim community.

Both are first-term MPs and are thus very junior, but like Nasharuddin and Husam, they represent the future of the party because their moderate image makes them more suited as leaders capable of representing all Malaysians.

Selain itu, beliau menyeru semua parti politik Melayu dan bukan Melayu supaya memerangi unsur perkauman yang amat ditakuti oleh semua rakyat negara ini.Menurut Ismail, unsur-unsur perkauman makin menebal selepas Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-12 yang menyaksikan kemerosotan prestasi Barisan Nasional."Adalah menjadi tanggungjawab kita semua untuk memerangi dan menghapuskan unsur tersebut."Hati bangsa Melayu tidak harus dilukakan. Nampak sangat sikap perkauman dan sikap menghina orang Melayu akan menjadi sangat nyata dan kita perlu menghadapinya," ujar beliau.Ismail mengajak orang Melayu mengambil pengajaran di atas kemenangan dan kekalahan sebuah parti Melayu yang telah lama berjasa kepada orang Melayu kerana kini terdapat parti Melayu yang tidak mempunyai pengalaman memerintah masyarakat berbilang kaum yang kompleks. "Maka, mereka menggunakan kesempatan ini untuk melepaskan geram dan membalas dendam dan ini bertentangan dengan Perlembagaan Negara," ujarnya.

One of the many dissapointing news that I am facing this weekend :(

My condolonces to sister ruqayyah NUS and the NOLS (national org of labour student) and also fosis people who s worked hard to reinstate ken livingstone, albeit a failed campaign.

I am so detached from british politics these days.its so dissapointing that I am no longer in constant learning mode from british politics. And let's not get started on malaysian politics.or the ever patronising malay politics.

I think just by reading the statements made by these british politicians, one (read msian politicians) has a lot to learn from them.especially the magnamity of one self both in the celebration of victory and in the face of defeat.

Read the tribute by boris to ken.this is truly british politics at its best surely.

P.s when did nick clegg became lib dem leader??? Sir ming was deposed? I miss london lah :(

I love it when the edge goes on a public crusade!

This week it is membuka pekung di dada of all those jokers ( read patrick sekian sekian ) who have stripped the terengganunites (betul ker nih) off their right to the 5percent oil royalty money

As a matter of fact, terengganu people probably receive a pittance of that 5percent (or nothing at all) since 10 percent of the people in terengganu is under poverty level! Isn't that crazy? That's like 5 percent more than national average level of poverty.and they are the richest state in terms of revenue.

It is so much fun to read the edge editorials strips it all for public reading.

If u guys want to know how we ( read umno ) has cheated the people of terengganu off their rightful claim towards oil money from their land, go buy the latest the edge!

I was rather dissapointed to find out that the barisan nasional representative datuk saifudin abdullah had to cancel his attendance at the last minute due to a ministerial meeting (he is the deputy minister for rural development ministry) then again the dude is like 45 yrs old, don't think he can be considered belia! (Unless u r using the umno definition)

Janice and izzah are both 28 yrs old and naser is 32.

I did suggest to lee they shud have invited other bn mp's who are under 35 ( there's only 2 by the way and I'm sure u guys know who s son are they) but i don't know why lee decided not to.

Anyways the forum went quite well

I have always said to my friends, local and foreign, that if u want to know the real truth about malaysia, printed and distributed, then read the edge.

I am one of those lucky boys who was introduced to this brilliantly edited weekly financial newspaper, at the rather tender age of 16. I really thank my father for this. I never stopped reading it eversince, bar when I was away in england (even then I wuldnt miss it when I get back home for summer hols).

The edge, for some 'reasons', could really call a spade a spade. I mean, what newspaper in this bolehland could do that ( well pre 8th march 08 at least not many could). If u say the sun, well then u shud know that the sun only came after the edge, and the sun is under the same roof with the edge.

I always think that the edge has this subtle political agenda in it, in a good way that is. It subcribes to the notion that a more competitive, meritocratic, open and liberal malaysia, is the best way forward to this young nation ( yes 50 is young ok )

It always comes up with all this amazing scoops! There's so many of them related to the corporate world (such as the disney deal, the umno companies saga, etc) and then there s also the ones that I call a true political scoop.I still remember that a week before dsai was released, someone wrote in the edge that he will be released next week, and it actually came true! I mean what bigger political scoop than that?!

I think in malaysia, as long as u talk about money and the corporate world, u can get away with criticising the govt or politics.
Maybe because at the end of the day, all govts either the bn or pakatan, wud need a strong corporate world behind it.

Anyways,

I am always amaze by the information that they can gather through their connection, and then writing a brilliant article abt it. I always enjoy the articles that criticises govt policies, glc's or just any random non performing companies, and all are done in the name of corporate journalism!

For me, the works of mr kay tat as editor, and writings of anna taing, leela barrock, jose barrock, risen jayasilen,m shanmugam, azam aris, and yes kam raslan (who apparently is now on holiday somewhere), is just phenomenal sometimes! And kam if ure reading this pls come back writing, two weeks reading that dude trying his best to impersonate ure writing, it is just unbearable!

I always recommend to my young corporate friends, please read the edge . I am very sad that only a handful read them regularly, while the majority has never even read them. I mean how are u going to be a good ceo one day if u don't read the edge? Its like the textbook for corporate malaysia! U can never go wrong with it man!

Meritocracy over politics

Let's admit it.former gerakan dep second gen datuk lee kah choon's appointment as director of invest penang has certainly got cm lim guan eng into trouble with the dap members, many viewing the move as a betrayal to dap.

But what's wrong with capable people agreeing to serve his state?

In fact, cm lim's courage to appoint the best for the job shud be emulated by others.

The same principle shud apply to glc's.talented people shud not be disqualified from key positions in a glc or govt companies just because they are of certain race or religion, or affiliated to the wrong party.

We don't know how many pas members were sidestepped during promotion exercise in the civil service.

And when dato seri idris jala was appointed to the top post as mas ceo, let's not pretend that there no noises from some within the barisan nasional.

*He is a non muslim, apparently they didn't know this until 2 months or so into his appointment.

What's more imp is that he was appointed because khazanah saw him as the best man for the job. The fact that mas was turned around earlier than expected is proof that his appointment was the right move.

It must be ensured that a person is appointed based on merit and not overlooked because of race religion or political affiliation.

To borrow lim guan eng's word, the time has indeed come for leaders to approach governance based on competence, accountability and transparency.

So stop bickering and start doing what's right for the public.
